Mildred O’Hara was not having an easy time of things. Aware now that there was a police investigation into Anna’s disappearance, and that even they believed the rumors circulating around town to be true, Mildred was on the verge of a complete nervous breakdown. Then, to make matters even worse, in late January she opened her mailbox to find a letter written in a very distinctive script.

The letter bore a return address of Homeyer, Fontana California, and was addressed only to Mildred O’Hara. Tearing it open, Mildred read it with trembling hands, becoming more and more alarmed by what Charles had written. He was planning to come back to Factoryville, he told her, and would be coming round to see her when he arrived.

Mildred dropped the letter, and immediately began to panic. She was absolutely terrified of Charles Homeyer, who she was now convinced had murdered his wife and disposed of her remains in the basement of this very house. Why would he be coming back here? What did he want? Maybe he was planning to return to burn the house down and destroy any evidence he might have left there. Maybe he was coming back to kill them all. She didn’t know, but she did not want this psycho showing up at her front door.

Looking at the postmark on the envelope, Mildred realized the letter had been mailed more than a week earlier. My God, she thought, he could be showing up here any minute. Rushing to the doors, she locked each of them, and then called her husband asking him to come home. When Carl finally got there, it took him a long time to calm his wife down.
